We’ll start on the weekend of July 22. Sat the 22nd will see an introduction to Video Art by MediaNet ED Peter Sandmark  and MN Technical Director Kirk Schwartz at 1 PM. Sunday afternoon there will be a session on audio and sound design with David Parfit.  Monday evening will continue with an artist talk about interactivity and interactive installation by Justin Love.  Over the next couple of evenings Kirk will give a basic intro to Final Cut Pro to those who need it and a seminar on the filters available in FCP and Keyframing filters and effects in FCP. On the evening of July 27th there will be a feedback session for people to discuss ideas and get feedback and suggestions for possible projects. Pretty much anytime starting this week you will be able to access MediaNet video equipment to start shooting the video components of your project. We will also have a station set up with sensors and components necessary to start experimenting with interactivity. Saturday and Sunday, the 30th and 31st there will be sessions with Justin Love on interactivity and using arduinos and sensor devices. From August 1st to 9th you will have the opportunity to create your interactive project. On aug 3rd, Victoria media artist Farheen Haq will give a talk about installation art from the artist’s perspective.  From the 9th to the 14th you will have the opportunity to create your interactive installation at Open Space Gallery. On the 9th the plan is that the gallery will open to the public (assuming most of the projects are ready). The opening reception will be on Thursday the 11th or Friday the 12th (we haven’t quite nailed that down at this point) and the show will close on Sat the 13th.  So, that’s the plan so far – but some things could still get shuffled around a bit.

Cost will be $200 for MediaNet members and $250 for non members. Some of the basic supplies to get you started will be supplied by MediaNet. If your project gets complex you will be responsible for scrounging or purchasing supplies for your specific project. You will have access to MediaNet equipment and editing facilites for the duration of the program (booking subject to the same rules as members). Kirk and Scott Amos will be available for mentoring depending on the schedules.

If you wish to participate please book ahead. There will be a limited number of spaces for this production program. Fees must be paid before the program starts and your space is not reserved until we have received payment.

This should be a lot of fun.

I will start in the morning in the foyer just outside medianet and will hook up cameras and audio. Please come by and get familiar with the gear and the set up. For those who want to see how the whole set up works come in around 10.  Cat will be here around 1 to do a couple of off the cuff interviews. So I hope to see as many of you  who are involved in the tech aspects as possible

We will discuss guests for the upcoming vic arts live and who and how to contact them and what story we are telling in the interviews. 3) we need some volunteers! Help out MediaNet and earn Volbucks for your next project. Right now we are looking for someone to help with our facebook page and events and with website updates and page construction. contact Kirk at technical@media-net.bc.ca if you have a couple of hours a week to help us upgrade our social media presence and/or web site.

4) Due to increased maintenance costs on the HC1 camcorders we will be increasing the rental rates to $10/day for that camcorder. It’s still a deal as each kit has a wide angle lens, ploarizing filter and a5 hour batter as part of the kit

5) Join the MediaNet Live Stream team. MediaNet is launching new live to the internet streaming initiatives. Victoria Arts Live is going to be a live to the internet arts show featuring local performers and artists in a tv style magazine show. As well, on May 28th we will be teaming up with Jason from the Sunset room to livestream the opening party/launch of the Sunset Room’s new artist oriented website – Sunset Labs.We will have a team orientation meeting next Wed May 11 at 7 pm. Let us know if you are interested in being part of the team

But we need the help of members who want to learn more about streaming, camerawork, audio, research and interview techniques in the context of a live to internet show.

We are planning a monthly live arts show (one monday evening a month) in co-operation with the Victoria Events Centre and the Community Arts Council. It will be a live to the internet arts show that will follow the format of the recent Mary Lake Webathon   http://www.ustream.tv/channel/savemarylake that involve live music, interviews and more.

As well, at the end of this month we are teaming up with Jason Guille (of the Sunset Room) to live stream an event from Glow European Pub. This will be on Saturday the 28th, followed by an event at the Sunset Room.

You will be working under the direction of Cat and myself (Kirk) to set up, put together and take down the shows. Let us know what you would be interested in and if you have any experience. Over the next couple of weeks we will be selecting our first team and there are going to be continuing opportunities as we move forward.

As well, we will be looking for musicians, artists and performers and will give preference to MediaNet members

1) Some technical hours will be changed through the rest of the fall and winter. MediaNet will only be open from 9 am to 10:30 am Saturdays for equipment return and pick up. This is due to my assuming some documentary organization responsibilities with the Vircs Enable youth program.

3) MEDIANET & VANCOUVER ISLAND SCHOOL OF ART COLLABORATE ON VIDEO ART COURSE
Video Art (PHOT w220-12)
This workshop will be led by instructors Peter Sandmark and Kirk Schwartz, from Victoria’s non-profit video art centre, MediaNet, and will introduce students to examples of video art, examining audio-visual vocabulary, shot types, effects, moving camera and how each affects mood and meaning. Using equipment provided by MediaNet, the participants will work in groups of two to develop, and then shoot and edit a short video art piece.

6) Cat and I are reshaping our vision for a live arts show. We are going to start smaller and grow so instead of beginning with a full fledged streaming show we are going to start with artist interviews and events posted to our youtube channel, facebook page and Vantage Point blog. Intro to Final Cut Pro is a 6 hour hands on seminar. Limited to 5 people each person is situated at a MediaNet computer as we collectively learn how to import and capture, basic editing, using photos and finally exporting your project. 3) the Blender Interest Group, headed by Doug Jones, will meet Monday Oct 4 at MediaNet. The Blender Interest Group was created to explore and learn the open source 3D animation program Blender in a co-operative environment.

4) EcoDoc 2010 Screening Tuesday 5 Oct at the VEC 1415 Broad St. Doors open at 6:30. Come down and enjoy your favourite beverage while you enjoy this years EcoDoc videos. Featuring local people and situations illustrating the most important topics of our time – The Environment!. There will be an audience favourite award and a judges award of merit presented to the filmmakers.

5) LIVE Victoria! MediaNet, in partnership with the Victoria Events Centre, is taking on the challenge of creating a monthly  Arts Magazine show. Produced by Kirk Schwartz and Cat Lewis the show will be live to tape, (and possibly live streamed over the internet). First Show is  Monday OCTOBER 25th. We need volunteers to help us create this show. If you are interested email communications@media-net.bc.ca or call the office at 250-381-4428. This is your chance to learn about creating live video events. We need help with tech and production. For the tech crew personnel we are looking for: a Video switcher; an audio mixer; and 3 camera people.  For production we need: 2 reseacher/production assistants and a floor director/production assistant. And then we would like a couple of flexible multitasking helpers. The format will be interview followed by performance, repeated as necessary.

If you can’t help out we would be very happy to have you as part of the live audience. It’s a casual cabaret atmosphere at the VEC where you can sit, watch, listen and enjoy accompanied by your favourite beverage and your favourite people

1) Kirk will be taking 2 weeks leave starting week of July 26 so MediaNet will be closed on Sat July 31 and Sat Aug 7.  As well, MediaNet will be closed on Monday Aug 2 for the Aug Holiday weekend (that means if you take out a camera on Friday and bring it back on Tues you get 3 days for the price of 1)
2) Pulse Interval, a co-project of MediaNet and Open Space Gallery opens on Friday July 23 at 7:30 PM. The Artist Talk will be on Sat July 24 at 2 PM.  Pulse Interval is a presentation of Video and Audio installation works by MediaNet members Jamie Drouin and Farheen Haq as well as Video artists Azin Seraj and Andrew Forster.
