2) MediaNet will be closing at 12 Noon on Friday Dec 4. Sorry for any inconvenience.

3) A Reminder – Equipment Returns are between 9 and 9:30 AM. Equipment Pick Up is between 9:30 and 10 AM.  If you do not return equipment on time you will be charged for an additional day’s rental. If you do not pick your equipment up on time we will assume that the booking is cancelled and may rent the equipment to another member. Arrangements can be made for later pick up or drop off but alternate arrangements must be made at least 24 hours in advance.

4) This Sat, Dec 5, there will be a Final Cut Introductory workshop 11 am to 5 pm. We have had a cancellation so there is one space available. Email communications@media-net.bc.ca to reserve. Cost is $50 members, $80 non members.  Members should note that after 11 am on Sat equipment access is restricted and the edit suites, except for the G5 in the outer office, will not be available.

5) OPEN CINEMA Screening Series presents the Victoria premiere of FUEL. Presented in collaboration with  Cowichan Alternative Energy and The BC Sustainable Energy Association. December 10, 2009, at the IMAX Theatre    A fundraiser for Cowichan Alternative Energy  Doors at 7pm, screening at 7:30 Suggested donation $10-$20

6) Victoria Independent Producers Association present MoTown High on Sat Dec 12 at 10 AM at the Capitol 6 Downtown. Admission is by suggested $5 donation. Created by Barbara Hagar of Aarrow Productions, Motown High is the longer, theatrical version of the story of how Motown legend Martha Reeves came to Vic High, inspiring and thrilling the Vic High R&B band. Filmmaker Bret Gaylor will into his film Rip: a Remix Manifesto at 7 via a skype projection followed by the movie
After the movie, its a live discussion with Justin Love, DJ Murge, Peter Sandmark and Mike Sheehan as the moderator.

2) My Son the Pornographer – Breakfast and a Movie anyone?

Take 2 brings together Victoria audiences with Victoria filmmakers. Admission is by suggested donation ($5). My Son the Pornographer was sold out at the Victoria Film Festival and rated by the audience as one of the top 5 films at the festival in 09 Rated 14A
My Son the Pornographer is a film about the love between a father and son, about acceptance and reconciliation, about coming to terms with the good and the bad that shapes our lives. Filmmaker Art Holbrook discovers his son Kole was molested as a child after Holbrook’s marriage broke up. He travels to Prague to try to reconnect to his son Kole who is working as a pornographer. Art finds he must face his guilt that he failed to protect his son and his fear that he failed as a father. His son must face his sense of abandonment and deal with the repercussions of his molestation. Through the deep bond of their mutual love each comes to understand and accept the other in this journey between continents and through emotions as large and stormy as the ocean that separates those continents.
Art Holbrook will be able to update you an Kole’s current activites.

3) MediaNet and the Salt Spring Film Festival have joined forces to produce an intensive filmmaking experience on Salt Spring Island for MN and SSFF members the weekend of November 6 to 8.
Generously hosted by MediaNet member Marion Pape, eight Salt Spring Islanders will have 60 hours to make a doc. MediaNet will supply the equipment for this intensive workshop. Instructed by myself (Kirk Schwartz) with the assistance of MediaNet member and filmmaker Alan Bibi and SaltSpring Film Festival organizers Jim Meadows and Diane Copeland-Thomas eight SaltSpringers will shoot and edit a short doc in under 3 days.
Victoria members should be aware that editing facilities at the MN offices will be very restricted from 6 to 9 November.

Rally, EcoDoc Scholarship, NFB seminar, Job opp

2) Expression of interest – EcoDoc Scholarship –  We may have a partial or a full scholarship for the EcoDoc program. No promises right now but if you would be interested please drop an email at mailto:communications@media-net.bc.ca with your contact phone number and let us know why you should be the recipient of an EcoDoc scholarship. Due to the shortage of time until the program starts (Saturday 12th Sept) we will only be able to contact the successful recipients (if in fact we receive the donation). Please let us know if you would need a full scholarship ($150) or a part Scholarship ($75). We are currently discussing the scholarship with a potential donor and will know the outcome shortly. (there are currently 3 to 4 spaces still open in EcoDoc)

3) INVITATION TO VICTORIA FILM AND DIGITAL MEDIA PRODUCERS
ViFPA is pleased to be presenting an information session on the “Digital Strategy at the NFB” with Tracey Friesen, Executive Producer of the NFB’s Pacific and Yukon Centre. The session will take place on Thursday, September 10th from 3 – 5 pm in the Orientation Room at ‘A’ Victoria, 1420 Broad Street.
“Digital Strategy @ the NFB.  How is the film board beginning to define for itself: online storytelling, interactive narrative, web documentary, original digital content?  We’ll look at a few NFB sites and many more external ones, for inspiration and dialogue.
What is the impact of this emerging genre on team collaboration, revenue, social intent and artistic expression?”

4.  COORDINATOR NEEDED FOR FALL “TAKE TWO” FILM SCREENINGS

The Victoria Film Producers’ Association (ViFPA) is seeking an organized and self-motivated person with an interest in film to co-ordinate and promote screenings of our members’ work. VIFPA sponsored several “Take Two” screenings over the past year. The final event in May (The Immortal Beaver)  was a sell-out in the 120-seat theatre at the Capitol 6. The coordinator will organize a fall season of two or three screenings with an accompanying promotional campaign. An honorarium of $100 per screening, plus 25% of the donations collected at the door is being offered to someone who will co-ordinate, promote and work the door at the screenings. 5) Aarrow Productions has openings for a Production Coordinator and a Production Assistant with Down2Earth, a new 13 X 30 minute Aboriginal environmental series licensed to APTN. The series will be in production from September 21 – December 15, 2009. Resumes should be emailed to Barbara Hager, Producer/Director, at bhager@shaw.ca by September 11, 2009. EcoDoc, CAC awards, NFB digital strategy

1) EcoDoc starts next Saturday 12 Sept. There are workshops and more for the participants and some workshops and talks for you all. 2) MediaNet members sweep CAC practicing artist awards
Friday night at the CAC gallery saw an awards ceremony that featured MediaNet members scooping up $2000 in awards.  The competition was tough, especially in the Experimental Expression category. Scott Amos and Rick Raxlen dominated that category and MediaNet member Kyath Battie took home the top award of $400 in the Personal Experession Category. For those of you that missed your chance to see the award winning films a compilation DVD will be available for borrowing at the CAC office later this week. The award winners were:

At this point, the FX1 and the Z1U are available for member advance booking but may be booked by EcoDoc participants during the program if members have not made advanced bookings.

* you may book by phone ONLY if you talk to Kirk, Cat or Peter.  NO PHONE MESSAGES!
* Pick up time is 9:30 to 10 AM unless other arrangements are made IN ADVANCE.  If you have not picked up or made other arrangements by 10 am your equipment may be booked out to other members.
* return time is 9 to 9:30 am – other arrangements may be made in advance but if you do not have the equipment back by 9:30 you may have to pay another day’s rental

EcoDoc Details and workshops

EcoDoc is a 3 week program for filmmakers and environmentalists to  realize and communicate their vision to the Victoria public, to BC and to the world. MediaNet, in partnership with The Community Arts Council of Greater  Victoria is presenting a week of seminars and workshops for the EcoDoc participants and to the community.

We are proud to have MediaNet members and Media Partners join with us to bring a mentored filmmaking program to the Victoria community.

The registration fee for the program is $150 (or $125 for MediaNet or Cinevic members) and guarantees participants a  space in all the workshops as well as access to MediaNet equipment and editing facilities (rental costs included in the registration fee). During the 3 week period of EcoDoc all participants will have access to MediaNet’s production and editing facilites and  technical support. Participants will be guided in working with Final Cut and Final Cut Express as well as support for audio and video aquisition.

1) Relative Synchronicity: black and white images and coloured sound  – July 20 – August 1, 2009
$60 includes 1 roll of b+w film (2 1/2 mins), with hand-processing and video transfer, hands-on soundtrack workshop where you will learn the elements of sound shaping and manipulation and post-production facilities.
A two-week workshop.
Week 1: shoot a roll of b+w super 8 film and edit it in camera.
Week 2: create a digital soundscape using manipulated sound for your film.

The first blender workshop was held on Sat July 4th and the Blender interest group and discussion will be held here at MediaNet on Friday July 17th. All members with an interest in Blender are invited to drop in and share their tips and insights into this full features (but sometimes complicated) 3D animation program

considering fall and winter workshops 09/10

Here are some of the workshops we are considering for Fall and Winter. If you have a suggestion or an request for a workshop please let me know. If you would like to give a workshop in an area where you have some expertice phone or email me and we will discuss who, what, when and why!
Not all of these workshops/seminars will be offered so your feedback, either by email or on the tech blog is really appreciated.
Cost for the 2.5 hr semiar programs will be $5, cash or volbucks. Cost for other programs will be announced. Scholarships requests and/or payment with volbucks will be considered but will depend on program costs.
Programs like EcoDoc and Experiment are offered in additon to these workshops and Cat is putting together a schedule of artist talks and presentation programs.

Activist Video Workshop (1 Day)
Richard Boyce, environmentalist, anctivist and filmmaker presents a half day workshop on activist filmmaking. Beyond making documentaries, Richard has used video and media to motivate, in court cases and as part of activist strategy
Basic colour correction    (2.5 hours)
Intro to the colour wheel and some basic colour correction techniques in FCP and FCExpress
Basics of Audio (3 parts x 2.5 hours)
A Three Part Course. Part 1 is the Theory of Sound and How We Hear. Part 2 is practical focusing in sound gathering and micing techniques. Part 3 concentrates on some post production tools found in Final Cut
Blender (multiple sessions) (Doug Jones) (this workshop will be starting in July)

2) Blender animation starts in July
Part workshop, part interest group the Blender animation program will start in July and meet twice a month. The first meeting will be a  workshop led by MediaNet member Doug Jones and the second meeting will be a progress meeting to share tips and solve problems.
The first five topics will be run as stand alone so we can allow for some intake of new faces.

May 9 – EARLY AVANT GARDE CINEMA, 7 pm, (Community Arts Council of Greater Victoria, G-6 1001 Douglas St.) Peter Sandmark, Executive Director of MediaNet, former teacher of film production at Concordia University, will introduce present films and lead a discussion of experimental aesthetics. Titles include works by:  Fernand Leger,  Man Ray, Willard Maas,   Marie Mencken, Sidney Peterson,  Maya Deren,  Stan Brakhage,  and Bruce Bailie.

May 10 – 1 pm, MediaNet office, Grace Salez, Media artist and video art instructor at University of Victoria, will give a presentation on personal experimental works and performance art, and lead an exercise with cameras. (Open to EXPERIMENT participants only).

May 10 – 7 pm, (Community Arts Council of Greater Victoria, G-6 1001 Douglas St) Lianne McLarty, Professor of Film Studies at the University of Victoria,  will talk about contemporary experimental film/video in Canada, and present several experimental films.

May 11, 12 – 7 pm, MediaNet office.  Kirk Schwartz (MediaNet Technical Director) – Presentation and workshops on post-production and video editing, using superimposition and compositing techniques.
(Open to EXPERIMENT participants only).

May 14 – 7 pm, (Martin Batchelor Gallery, 712 Cormorant St.) Rick Raxlen, filmmaker and former teacher of film production at Concordia University, will give an artist’s talk on 40 years of experimental filmmaking, and show several of his film works.
May 16 – 7 pm (Community Arts Council of Greater Victoria, G-6 1001 Douglas St.) Scott Amos, MediaNet Technicican, filmmaker and teaching assistant at University of Victoria.  Presentation on collage experimental films and the use of film in video.

Get to know the difference between Movie DVDs and Data DVDs and when to burn the best type for your needs

Voice Overs and Voice Recording
Using QuickTime Pro and Final Cut on the Mac or on an external recorder

Learn the best voice mic techniques as well as how to record voice overs using QuickTime pro or right into Final Cut

an unusual program for unusual filmmakers
Sat May 9 to Saturday May 30.  Members $150  Non Members $175
A three week learning and production program to experiment with a variety of forms and techniques. Participants will have the opportunity to expand their filmmaking horizons through a variety of seminars and workshops. Works created through the program will be screened on Sat May 30 and may be distributed on the internet.

The Engaged Body is a week-long intensive workshop focusing on “Live Art”- performance art as embodied actions and performative works. Taught by educator and performance artist Judith Price
